Is a Tummy Tuck the right procedure for you?
September 15, 2017
A tummy tuck, otherwise known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure which aims to improve the shape of the stomach by removing fat and excess skin. Despite some perceptions, it is not a weight loss procedure.
The best results can be seen after dramatic weight loss or pregnancy, when exercise and dieting alone is not enough. It is advised that all other weight loss options should be exhausted first before committing to cosmetic surgery as it is a complex procedure and you will be left with visible scarring.
There are three types of tummy tuck available to patients.
Mini tummy tuck – An incision is made across the lower tummy and a small amount of skin is removed. The operation is shorter and simpler than a standard tummy tuck and you are left with a smaller scar. A mini tummy tuck is suitable for patients looking to remove a small amount of excess skin.
Standard tummy tuck – A long incision is made from hip to hip and the excess fat and skin is removed. This procedure is suitable for patients who have undergone weight loss, or after pregnancy. A standard tummy tuck is usually performed alongside liposuction surgery.
Complex tummy tuck- Otherwise known as a ‘Fleur de Lys’ this procedure involves two incisions, one horizontal and one vertical, and the excess fat and skin is removed. A complex tummy tuck is suitable for patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss.
All three abdominoplasty procedures provide excellent results in the right circumstances.
