Rhinoplasty Surgery: Meeting Your Expectations

patient happy after Rhinoplasty surgery

The nose forms the central portion of the face and has a very significant impact on facial aesthetics. Whilst most rhinoplasty surgeries are undertaken by our surgeons for cosmetic reasons, in some cases it can be for functional reasons as well, such as improving the nasal airways.

During your pre-operative assessment with your surgeon, it is important to outline the main concern that you have with your nose. If correcting the shape of the nose is the major factor, you must have realistic expectations regarding what can be achieved with rhinoplasty surgery. Your surgeon will discuss with you how your nose should look in relation to your other facial features. It is important to understand that the goal of rhinoplasty surgery is not to achieve the perfect nose, which is highly subjective, but rather to improve its appearance and as a result, your confidence.

Common reasons to undertake rhinoplasty surgery include; straightening the nose, removing a hump on the nose, improving the angle of the nose, or reduce the size of the nasal tip. These conditions may have been inherited or can be caused by external trauma to the face.

Whilst this procedure is not usually available on the NHS for cosmetic reasons, it is provided if it is needed to correct breathing difficulties.

The two main techniques used when performing a rhinoplasty are open and closed surgery. Open surgery includes making an incision outside of the nose, between the nostrils. Closed surgery includes making small incisions inside the nostrils.

Following the procedure, a splint will be provided which needs to be worn for one week. Patients are advised to take 1-2 weeks off from work and not to drive whilst their splint is on for the best possible recover.

At Candover, rhinoplasty surgery is performed by our ENT surgeon Mr Paul Spraggs and Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Mansoor Khan.
