Eyes Reveal the First Signs of Ageing
August 25, 2017
One of the first places where signs of ageing become visible is the skin around our eyes. Dark circles and eye bags are amongst the most common skin complaints as they can make us look tired and dull- but there is a simple procedure that can improve their appearance.
There are multiple factors that contribute towards the ageing of the skin around our eyes. As we age, we produce less collagen and the skin around our eyes becomes much thinner and more translucent, meaning fine lines and veins become visible. The loss of fat and volume under our eyes eliminates the support which causes shadows to form, resulting in a dark appearance and sagging skin. Elastin production also slows as we get older, which causes the eyelids to lose their elasticity and appear droopy.
At Candover we offer eyelid surgery as a solution to remove or reduce eye bags and tighten up the skin around the eyes.
Otherwise known as a Blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery involves removing excessive skin, muscle or fat around the upper or lower eyelids. The procedure aims to achieve a more youthful appearance by removing or reducing sagging eyelids or eye bags.
It is a relatively simple procedure which usually takes no more than two hours, and most patients can return home the day.
There are two types of Blepharoplasty surgery available: upper and lower eyelids.
Surgery on the upper eyelids generally involves an incision along the eyelid crease where the scar will be hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid. Surgery on the lower eyelids generally involves an incision directly below the lower lashes or inside the eyelid and moving or removing unwanted fat.
All eyelid surgery is performed by our Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Charles Sandy and our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Mansoor Khan.
