Ever wondered what the difference is between Anti-wrinkle injections and Dermal Fillers?

June 29, 2017

As we age, our body’s natural collagen which keeps our skin taut and firm, and the elastin which provides the skin’s elasticity, starts to decline. As a result, lines and wrinkles develop.

Two of the most in-demand anti-ageing cosmetic treatments, Anti-wrinkle injections and Dermal Fillers, are often confused with one another. Anti-wrinkle injections relaxes the facial muscles, treating the lines which appear as a result of facial muscle movement, whereas, Dermal Fillers are used to fill out lines and to enhance the lips and cheeks.

Anti-wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are a medical treatment used to help temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. This reduces the appearance of lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines.

Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only medicine that should only be prescribed and given by an appropriately trained healthcare professional. At Candover, anti-wrinkle injections are offered by our Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Charles Sandy, our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Mansoor Khan and our ENT surgeon Mr Paul Spraggs.

The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and involves small amounts of anti-wrinkle treatment being injected into the targeted facial muscles.

The results are not immediately visible: it takes three to five days before the injections take effect, and up to two weeks for the full effect to be seen. The longevity of the results varies for each individual but generally follow up injections are required every nine months.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are used to fill out creases and wrinkles in the skin. They can also be used to increase the volume and definition of lips and cheeks.

The treatment time can vary from 30 minutes to an hour and involves filler being injected into the chosen area through a series of tiny needles.

At Candover our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Mansoor Khan is experienced in providing Dermal fillers to patients.
